"The story below is a perfect example of why we need you! "
The following is a very short story we noticed on a web site
called "High Beam"
In some ways, Risa Bejarano was a typical college sophomore. She
worried about finding a place to live, getting a car and balancing
school and work-all the things that trouble most college students.
But in other ways, Risa was different. Separated from her brothers
and sisters at age 9 because of abuse, Risa grew up in a dozen
foster homes. Nevertheless, she was the first member of her family to
graduate from high school, and she did so with honors. She earned
several scholarships for college.
Even so, Risa encountered difficulties that many former foster youth
face: renting an apartment with no parent to co-sign a lease; finding
money for a security deposit; getting to work and school in Los
Angeles without a car. With no family to fall back on, Risa had to
make it alone.
After a year of college, Risa had no place to live during the summer
of 2004. Like many college students, she had a part-time job, but
needed a way to get there. She spent her savings on a car, which left
no money for a security deposit.
On June 5, 2004, Risa Bejarano was found murdered, shot to death
next to the car that was her home.
At least 500,000 children and youth are steadily in
foster homes, year after year. ..
Some reunite with their biological families before age 18,
and a few will be adopted. A large percentage of
youths, turning age 18, "age out" of the foster system
every year.
Most youth at age 18, still have parents or extended
relatives or even friends who extend
housing, insurance, and perhaps sign on a car loan.
They have someone to offer emotional support during
their bad times.
Homeless youngsters whose life experience to age 18
has been primarily a stressful and possibly insecure
childhood now face challenges of being in the world
alone except for other youth in the same circumstances. .
By the time these homeless youngsters have turned 21,
nearly 50% have not finished high school, over 25% are
homeless; nearly 50% have become parents and only a
small percentage are self supporting! A large
percentage of these children live by engaging in
prostitution, theft, drugs, and for many their possibility
for a stable life ends with incarceration.
We are steadily losing hundreds of thousands, which
ultimately add up to millions of lives, that could have
perhaps made a valuable scientific discovery, or
become quality teachers or patriotic statesmen. We will
never know.
Government policy makers seem to be responding to
the current results of a tremendous body of research,
however, the wheels turn slowly. Besides, the
government can never effectively accomplish in these
matters what you and I, everyday American citizens can
accomplish by joining together to Foster The Hope in
these young people! .
