Our Mission
The mission of the American Kidney Fund is to fight kidney disease
through direct financial support to patients in need; health education;
and prevention efforts.
Our Vision
The American Kidney Fund envisions a world without kidney disease.
As we move toward that goal, we work to achieve a nation in which
kidney patients have access to the health care they need, and one in
which there are far fewer people with kidney disease.
Our mission is to facilitate, advocate and promote education, support
and research for the prevention, treatment and cure of liver disease.
Our History
ALF was created in 1976 by the American Association for the Study of
Liver Disease (AASLD).
In the 1950s, few children with cystic fibrosis lived to attend
elementary school. Today, advances in research and medical
treatments have further enhanced and extended life for children and
adults with CF. Many people with the disease can now expect to live
into their 30s, 40s and beyond.
The Diabetes Action Research and Education Foundation (Diabetes
Action), a non-profit 501(c)3 organization founded in 1990, is
committed to the prevention and treatment of diabetes and to the
funding of innovative, promising research aimed at finding a cure for
diabetes and diabetes related complications.
The Diabetes Research Institute (DRI) is a recognized world leader in
cure-focused research. Since its inception in the early 1970s, the DRI
has made significant contributions to the field of diabetes research,
pioneering many of the techniques used in islet cell transplantation.
From innovations in islet isolation and transplant procedures to
advances in cell biology and immunology, the Diabetes Research
Institute is now harnessing the power of emerging technologies to
develop new cell-based therapies to restore insulin production.
Epilepsy is a medical condition that produces seizures affecting a
variety of mental and physical functions. It’s also called a seizure
disorder. When a person has two or more seizures, they are
considered to have epilepsy.
The Lupus Research Institute (LRI) is the nation’s only nonprofit
organization solely dedicated to novel research in lupus.
We believe that innovative research is the key to finding safer and
more effective treatments and a cure for lupus.
Our results indicate we’re on the right track. With our bold approach
and rigorous standards, we’re making the breakthroughs that spell
compelling new hope for the 1.5 million Americans, and the millions
more worldwide, who suffer from this devastating autoimmune illness.
A cure for Parkinson's won't happen without individuals who are
dedicated to the fight. Meet some of the people who are making a
difference
The National Hemophilia Foundation is dedicated to finding better treatments and cures for bleeding and
clotting disorders and to preventing the complications of these disorders through education, advocacy
and research. Established in 1948, the National Hemophilia Foundation has chapters throughout the
country. Its programs and initiatives are made possible through the generosity of individuals,
corporations and foundations as well as through a cooperative agreement with the Centers for Disease
Control and Prevention (CDC).
For decades, the streets of the Bowery, Manhattan’s skid row, were
filled with down and out individuals hung-over, panhandling,
homeless and without hope. In 1971, a small group of these men came
together and bravely decided to change their lives through recovery,
caring professional support, and community action. The Bowery
Residents' Committee (BRC) was born.
The Hispanic Scholarship Fund (HSF) is the nation's leading Hispanic scholarship organization,
providing the Hispanic community more college scholarships and educational outreach support than
any other organization in the country. In 34 years, the Hispanic Scholarship Fund has awarded over
90,000 scholarships to students in need worth over $250M. Two-thirds of these students were the first
in their families to go to college.
The Center for Victims of Torture works to heal the wounds of torture on individuals, their families and
their communities and to stop torture worldwide.
Bread for the World is a collective Christian voice urging our nation’s
decision makers to end hunger at home and abroad. By changing policies,
programs and conditions that allow hunger and poverty to persist, we
provide help and opportunity far beyond the communities in which we live.
